Floccinaucinihilipilification
Good grief! What kind of a word is this??
Floccinaucinihilipilification
What does this word mean? Not Much At All! It means essentially "the act of regarding something as unimportant or
worthless." In other words, treating it as "not much at all".
It's actually a joke! That's right. This horrid looking word was invented as a bit of a joke by a college student at Eton College, who
created the word by combining four words from his Latin dictionary, all of which
meant "not much at all"...
floccus: a wisp of wool (used as part of an
idiom that meant "I don't care") naucum: a trifle nihilum: nothing,
worthless pilus: a strand of hair
Aren't you glad to know that? Now you probably want to know how to pronounce it, so you can impress all your friends.
I really doubt they will be impressed, but this is how I pronounce it:
Flossy-nossy-ny-ill-a-pill-if-ick-aye-shun
There. Say that three times fast!
This is one of 13 Easter Egg pages on The Problem Site. Can you find the others?
