The Related Word Search is not really a Word Search Puzzle. It's more like a Crossword Puzzle. But
it's not really like a Crossword Puzzle either; it's more like a Word Search Puzzle.
Makes no sense, right?
If you're anything like me, your basic Word Search Puzzle - in which you have a grid of letters and you must
search for hidden words within the grid - doesn't do much for you. Sure, it's fun if you have nothing better to do, like when
you're waiting in a restaurant that has one printed on the paper placemat. But even then, eventually you reach a point where
you have only two or three words left to find, and your mind rebels at the idea of going through the entire grid
letter by letter, looking for those words.
On the other hand, if you're anything like me, Crossword Puzzles don't do much for you either. Either they
take forever to do, because there are so many clues, or they use words that you've never even heard of,
so of course you can't finish it.
But there is another style of puzzle, which takes the very best components from both a Word Search Puzzle and a
Crossword Puzzle, and melds them together into a single puzzle. Just like in a Crossword Puzzle, you are given
a clue, and the location of a word; just like in a Word Search Puzzle, you have to find the hidden word. You
may be wondering, "How can the word be hidden, if you are given the location of the word?"
Good question. And perhaps the best way to explain is to give an example. If you didn't click the "sample puzzle" link at the top of the page, click here: Sample Puzzle, and then come back to this page
to finish reading the rules. When you click the link,
you will see a grid of 400 letters (20x20) with 20 letters highlighted. Each of these highlighted letters indicates
the location of a word. But what you aren't told is: which direction the word is going and where in the
word the highlighted letter falls. In other words, it might be the first letter, the last letter, or some letter in between.
The clue is listed at the top of the puzzle. In the example given, the clue is PRIME. All the words
relate in some way to the word "prime". The words may be synonyms, antonyms, or simply words (like minister or meridian)
that in some way are related to the word "prime".
At the bottom of the puzzle you will find spaces to write your answers. The numbers next to the spaces indicate
how many letters in each word. The best way to play is to circle each word as you find it, count up the letters, and then
write the word in an appropriate space below.
A couple warnings:
- Some words are actually phrases.
- The clue may have more than one meaning; for example some words function as both a noun and a verb.
As you work on this puzzle, you will notice that this style of puzzle removes the tedium connected with traditional
Word Search Puzzles; you never have to go searching through the entire grid for a word, because you know the general
location of each word in the puzzle.
Similarly, it removes the frustration associated with Crossword Puzzles which contains unfamiliar clues or vocabulary.
Even if you don't know the word, recognizing letter combinations that work together
can help you find the word, without resorting to dictionaries and other reference materials.
