Printable Games From Word Lists
One of the most-requested features by visitors to this site is a place to create and print puzzles such as jumbles and word searches. This section of the
site allows you to use word lists created by others to build printable worksheets, or create your own word lists (using spelling words, vocabulary words, or other items from
your school curriculum) and then use those word lists to create fun worksheets for your students.
Using Public Word Lists
Public Word Lists are lists which were created by visitors to this site, who then granted permission for them to be publicly displayed on the site. If you click "Public Lists" you
will see a list of all these word lists. Simply click on one to begin creating printable worksheets.
Creating Your Own Word Lists
- On the "My Lists" page, click the link to create a new list.
-
Now select a topic. It's a good idea to create a list in which all the words are related somehow, and give the list a title related to that topic. If you are doing a spelling or vocab list from your class curriculum, your words might not be related; in this case you might
want to give your list a title which will be easy for you to remember later on.
-
Decide if you are going to create clues to go with each word. It's a good idea to categorize your clues. For example, if you are doing a word list about planets, one clue
category might be "interesting facts", while another clue category might be "mythology".
-
Type up to four clue categories in the four spaces labeled "Categories-->". If your clues aren't categorized, you don't have to put anything in these spaces.
-
Now begin typing your words and their clues in the grid below. You don't need to have the same number of clues for each word.
-
Enter up to 50 words (with or without clues) in the spaces provided. If you don't have time to enter an entire word list, you can save it and return to it later.
-
Once you've saved your work, you will return to the "My Lists" page, where you can choose to edit, share, or delete your list.
- Click on your list title to begin creating printable game worksheets from it.
Sharing Your Word List
If you have created a word list which you think other people might like to use, click the 'S' icon next to your list name, to share the list. When you then click "Share",
the list will be queued for the site administrator to review it and decide whether to publish it for others to use. Do not submit lists which
contain spelling mistakes, or lists which do not have a theme or topic. (In other words, if you created a word list which contains 20 completely unrelated spelling words you used in class,
please don't submit it for sharing.) A general rule of thumb is, if you can't come up with a short and pithy title that describes the contents of the list, you probably shouldn't share it.
Creating Printable Worksheets
When you view a word list, you will see an option to choose a puzzle type (descriptions below), and
a "Clue" option. If you choose "Random," the site will randomly choose clues whenever more than one clue is given for a word. If you choose "no clues," the site
will create a worksheet without any clues. If you choose a category of clues, the site will only use words which have a clue in that column.
Game/Puzzle Types
Jumbled Word Puzzle - The letters of the words are scrambled and displayed in mixed-up order, and underscores are displayed below for students to write the unscrambled word.
Word Search - A standard word search puzzle. Please note that the word search feature will not necessarily use all the words. This is due to the random nature of creating a word search.
Related Word Search - Included among the puzzles you can create and print is the Related Word Search - a puzzle type designed for this site, by the site administrator. The words are placed
in an array - just as in a word search - and one letter of each word is highlighted. Instead of displaying the words at the bottom of the page, the printable worksheet will include clue words.
