Indirect Objects

An indirect object is the person or thing to whom or for whom something is done. If the preposition to is expressed, then the word is the object of the preposition rather than an indirect object. To help identify the indirect object, ask the questions to whom or for whom after the verb.

I gave Jane the book.
I gave the book to Jane.

In the first example, Jane is the indirect object of the verb gave answering the question to whom.

In the second example, Jane is the object of the preposition to.
