At the Mall
That time of the year: the mallbrims with bags
dyed in colorful graphics,
like carafes of sweet wine
making people drunk
as ads glare to claim
their next victim
in the throes of infernal zeal.
Toys, labels, purses...
But I must stop and look
at faces to assess how
this jolly spell turns mortals
into picky gods who let off steam
at the cash register,
after waiting in motionless lines.
Surely, gifting was decreed to be
the essence of human desire,
but if so, I wonder why
old seasonal songs come back
to shriek inside
the stores' loud speakers
like the lure of sirens.
Fala-la-la-la la la la la…
