Tiny Treasures
Tiny TreasuresCarrying a small, tin, heart-shaped box close in her arms, Libby wore the grin of the Cheshire cat as she presented her treasures. The tiny box held two small decorative horses among its contents. "I have horses" she said, in that childish tone that intimated their priceless value to a young girl. Her grandmother acknowledged this secret with due respect, as the tiny cover closed once again to protect them from dangers imagined.
Gramma felt the familiar surge just behind her eyes as she held back a flow of tears. It often happened when she felt that un-nameably close connection of a grandparent for her grandchild. She knew that in that precious box was an invisible treasure that belonged to them both. The love that joined the two of them.
As Libby slowly walked across the room, Gramma thought of her own childhood treasures, now gone but for the vivid memories they still held. She flashed quickly to her own grandmother's face and loving smile. She felt again for one fleeting moment that child-like happiness that Libby now knew.
The precious box was placed gently on the shelf amongst Libby's other belongings. A tiny treasure box holding two small horses and all that love. How wonderful the age when such little things can emit so much joy.
