All Good Things
All good things stay within me forever. What I mean is this: each goodness in my life becomes a part of me that can't be erased by bitterness or regret or sadness or disappointment. The simple goodness of a sun salutation on a snowy morning while the moon sets and the sun rises impacts me on the cellular level. It makes me healthier and happier in a way that is permanent. In the same way, the kindness of a cake baked for me by a friend lives with me forever, even after it is followed by her small and sharp betrayal. The import of this is not lost on me as I look back on the year passed and forward to the year ahead. I stopped making resolutions years ago, but this year I've been thinking I'll work with the mantra (if not resolution) to be kind when it would be easier to be unkind. I want to make kindness in my heart and head, actually, not just in my words and actions. So, if I am kind instead of unkind, it is a goodness that I've offered myself and someone else. And hopefully, it will be one good thing that will last somewhere, forever.
