Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction
The following is a piece of writing submitted by Rachael Acevedo on March 18, 2013
The Loss of Promise
A doe stretched its lanky neckBreathing in the fresh pine air.
A light breeze drifting
With an overwhelming swell of summer heat.
The sun shatters as snakes rise forth.
Red, yellow, brown, blue,
An avalanche of wicked teeth and searing eyes
Swooping toward a crouching figure in the fields.
The deer is swallowed whole.
The bumpkin cries.
Clouds spurt torrents,
And the snakes are swept away.
A fawn sneaks behind the country bumpkin,
Nudges him on the shoulder,
And he laughs
And lays down to rest.
