The Test
I had a long day at work and couldn't wait to veg."Lucy, I'm home!" I shouted when I walked in. I dropped my coat on the chair. I slumped on the couch and clicked the TV on.
"Joe?" Lucy called out from the bathroom. Yes, her name really is Lucy.
"Yeah, it's me. What's for dinner?" I asked. Being the sensitive guy that I am, I added "Want to order in?"
I knew she had a hard day too and wanted to make sure I wasn't implying she had to cook us something.
"Joe, can you come here?" Lucy sounded emotional.
Uh oh, I thought. I had spent the day putting out fires at work. One irate, unsatisfied client after another. I hope Lucy wasn't going to start a "discussion" or a fight.
I took a deep breath and walked over to the bathroom as slowly as I could. I heard her sniffle.
The door was ajar. I pushed it open.
"I...." Lucy's face was wet from tears, but then she smiled. "I took a pregnancy test just now."
Lucy held up the stick. It showed a plus sign.
We held each other and sobbed. We had finally passed the test.
