Conscientious Objector
He looked across at his Father, their leader, and sighed inwardly. His Father's hard, dark eyes glistened with eagerness for the oncoming business. All the others waited in like manner - all except him. The anticipation in the air was suffocating. He struggled to keep the bile from rising further in his throat. Despite the fact that he had been trained for this moment, and had been ceaselessly told that this was his destiny - a destiny to be proud of - his bravery and courage felt like it was equivalent to that of a lamb, maybe even less. He shivered as he looked into the victim's eyes next. The quiet acceptance and peaceful distance that emanated from them convinced him once and for all. He didn't quite understand it, but to him that was what courage really meant. And he was going to honor that courage and bravery in the way he felt was right. But he would definitely have some explaining to do to his Father and the rest of them afterward.More writing by this author
