Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The Color of Pride
Camo...My least favorite color, the one that makes breathing more like drowning,
tugs at my heart from a TV screen of combat helmets and rifles.
A world-wide traveller, checking the globe like Idaho farmland from an airplane,
wearing the faces of courage, tenderness, anger, and long-lost innocence.
A brave exchange, a trade-off for Folger's coffee in a Wisconsin sunrise,
traffic jams on Chicago's asphalt arteries, and piles of onesies near the washer
for catching the first tulips and the last blood-red leaves before the frost,
for pizza boxes and grocery lines...little things, things that make a life.
The last, most sacred wrapping of the ultimate sacrifice, and the proud
tear-stained and at-attention witness to the sounding of taps and thud of dirt.
The proudest color of our nation.
