Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction
Año Nuevo
The world woke clean and cool...rain had moved through and its smell still faintly clung to the damp buildings. I couldn't help thinking the earth had given itself a face scrub - behind the ears included - the last spiff-up of the old year.I suppose that's cliché, but I seem to be having a cliché New Year's Day. It's off to the OR for a C-section, for a brand new little person. Old year, new life and all that. It's a girl, they say, and she'll never be allowed to forget she's a New Year's baby. I can only imagine how that will shape her life. Surely there's some sort of blessing that comes with being born into a fresh new year, a year as whole and unscarred as this little one arriving today. No scars, no scandals, no tragedies burning it into our memories...yet.
2012, take care of yourself. Be boring, run-of-the-mill; be a safe place for this little one to get to meet the world. Be a truly happy, new year.
