"This is the counterpoint to the sonnet Hawk"
Bird's Eye View
Pedantic souls, they walk the earth belowWith callused, cautious feet that tread the sod,
And on they go, both carefully and slow,
With eyes returning to ground they've trod.
How strange, with all the universe ahead,
And all the hopes and dreams they could expect,
They spend their shallow lives in constant dread
And live in chronic, helpless retrospect.
See how, in fear, they hold the ground so tight,
As though the sky was far beyond their scope -
Too cautious to attain majestic heights,
They walk in tedium instead of hope.
And as I watch I cannot help but wonder why
These frightened souls are so afraid to fly.
