The following is a piece of writing submitted by Douglas on July 30, 2008
Photo I.D.
"So, you got your new driver's license?""Yep."
"Let me see it."
"Why?"
"I want to see the picture."
I can't imagine why anyone would want to see the picture on my driver's license, but he insisted, so I took it out of my wallet and handed it over.
He immediately started laughing.
"What's so funny?" I demanded.
"This picture! This is a horrible picture! What did you do, eat a hundred dill pickles before getting this picture taken?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You look so sour. Why couldn't you at least smile for the picture?"
"Tell me," I said, "what is the purpose of the photo I.D.?"
"For identification."
"And when am I going to need it?"
"Well, uh, I guess...when you get pulled over for speeding."
"And you think I'll be smiling then?"
