Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Douglas on July 16, 2012
"Okay, this one really needs some explanation. Most of the ventriloquism "shows" I do (with my puppet Jeorge the dodo bird) are at churches, and consequently Jeorge sings songs like "Jesus Loves Me" or "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

But once in awhile I get asked to do a non-church show, and of course they don't want me to do those sorts of songs. But I still want to be able to present some of the basic moral principles of the Bible, even if I never mention where they're from.

A year ago I preached a children's message in which I took John the Baptist's instructions to his listeners and boiled it down into 5 basic instructions, which I gave to the children as:

Be generous.
Don't be a cheater.
Don't be a bully.
Don't be a liar.
Be satisfied with what you have.

So even though you can see that this song never mentions John the Baptist, it still teaches those 5 principles.

And now the explanation is as long as the song, so I'll stop typing now. :D"

Don't Be a Dodo

The world is filled with dodos and
Not all are dodo birds
So listen well, and hear us tell
These simple dodo words:

"If you have got enough to eat,
And know someone who's needy
Don't hoard your stuff, be generous,
And nevermore be greedy.

"When you have got a job to do,
In work or play or school,
Don’t be a cheat, 'cause it’s not neat
To ever break the rules."

So don't be a dodo, No, don't be a dodo,
Oh, don't be a dodo, unless you're a dodo bird!
So don't be a dodo, No, don't be a dodo,
Oh, don't be a dodo, unless you're a dodo bird!
No, don't be a dodo, unless you're a dodo bird!

"Don't be a bully to your friends
Don't make an ugly scene.
For it provokes the other folks
Whenever you act mean.

"And speak the truth, don't ever lie
About your foes or friends,
Or they will be your enemies
And never make amends.

"Though some folks have a pile of stuff
A plane, a car, a yacht,
Just be content with what you're sent;
Be glad for what you've got."
