Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction
The following is a piece of writing submitted by Laura on May 31, 2014
"This is another form that I was introduced to during National Poetry Writing Month. Basically, a golden shovel is made by taking another poet's poem (preferably a short one) and then writing a poem with all the words from that poem being the last word in each line of the new poem. Can you tell whose poem I "golden shoveled"?"
Golden Shovel
I'm saving up myPennies for a candle,
Hoping that it burns
Without flickering at
Every gust of both
Windows at the ends
Of the room. It
Absolutely, I hope, will
Be clean and bright, not
Smoky like the last
One I purchased, the
Dud that went out at night.
It should be white, but
I would settle for, ah,
Pink! Dilemmas are my
Greatest, strongest foes,
Churning my mind and
Leading my thoughts to oh,
So many possibilities, that my
Questions have lost me some friends—
Though I dare say, it
Absolutely gives
Me pause that I would lose a
Friend over such a lovely
Candle, with all its light!
