Thanksgiving Feast, The passing of the Torch

As I look back I see the Thanksgiving Feast as a measure of time. As a young lad I remember going to Grandma's house for Thanksgiving and with all my cousins, aunts and uncles we would pack Grandma's little house. As it got more difficult for Grandma to prepare the holiday dinner we started to have it at my parents house and to me it seemed to take something away from the traditional dinner.

As I got older, married and had a family of my own we still went to my parents house for Thanksgiving until I bought the house I now live in. My house is in a newer part of the city and is larger, so we started to have Thanksgiving at my house. I remember my wife was nervous the first time we did this, afraid she would do something to ruin the traditional family meal. As I think back I'm sure my mother had the same worries and yet both were a smooth transition.

Now my daughter is married with a family and now that they have a house we are going to have our Thanksgiving Feast at her house. I now see this as a generational passing of the torch so to speak. The meal is the same menu but the location changes with the passage of time. I do not conceder us to be a traditional family except on this one holiday of the year and through the passing of time the menu always stays the same. As much as I have to be thankful for, it is still this way of life that I appreciate the most.
