Grab Bag Story
"I can get that for you, sir." I felt Melinda, my housekeeper, gently touch my arm just above the elbow. She did this to let me know of her presence. It's the simple things, like trying to prepare dinner, that you miss when your world suddenly plunges into darkness. The blindness overtook me three years ago. A result of glaucoma inherited from my grandmother. At least, that's one of the hypotheses I have come up with.
"Don't forget to blanch the asparagus," I reminded her. "I don't like my vegetables soggy."
She laughed and reminded me that I have told her this nearly every week since she started working for my wife and me. Every week, my wife's job requires her to work an extended shift at the hospital, so Melinda was hired to come in on those days to watch over me. Well, she says it's to keep me from terrorizing the neighborhood!
It's funny really. The husband of a successful doctor going blind for failing to take care of his eyes. Life became too busy, and remembering to put my eye drops in each night was too much of a hassle.
Guess I should have listened to my parents so many years ago : "Just shut up and take your medicine!" Who knew they knew what they were talking about?
