"A novel from the author of 'Captain Correli's Mandolin , set against the downfall of the Ottoman Empire"
Book Review
Louis de Bernieres' beautifully detailed 'Birds Without Wings' provides a lens into the world of a small village during the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. Drawing on a a couple of his characters from 'Captain Correli's Mandolin', this is a narrative of community and self. The black web of war infiltrates the longstanding peace of the village and its people. Characters are drawn with such vividness, it is difficult to think of them as fictional. The backdrop of war and all the associated atrocities, losses and sacrifices weaves the characters together. It is a dense, informative novel that is crafted with care and beauty.More writing by this author
